VMWare trials and tribulations

I'm running a network of 4 NetWare 6 servers. 2 for network services and 2 for email / document managment with GroupWise 6 DMS. The guy who set it up did a great job. It's been in place for about 4 years now and we haven't had any real catastrophies stemming from design or implementation.

My task right now is to plan for catastrophies stemming from other sources of destruction. The obvious potential culprit will be building damage, specifically the neighbors remodeling and hitting the plumbing / sprinkler system.

The tools for the task are VMWare ESX 3.0, an HPDL380 and an amount of patience that I did not know I had. So far, it's been quite a ride. If you ask somebody whether or not NW6 Clustering can be done with VMWare, they will be sure to tell you two things: 1. nobody does that and 2. you should use external storage to do it effectively. Back to 1: People have installed this type of network and one man, Rob, is making a killing telling others how he did it. One day, I will have to read his book and determine if we arrived to the same conclusions.

I'll provide more updates to this blog if compelled to do so. Have a great day.
